Samsung started including IR Blaster in its flagship devices with the launch of Galaxy S4. From then, it continued in all flagship devices until the launch of Galaxy Note 5. There were lot of rumors and speculation on internet that Samsung might come again with IR Blaster in Samsung Galaxy S8.
But it seems like users will have to wait more because Samsung Galaxy S8 is officially launched now and there is no IR Blaster in it. So, the question is Why Samsung didn’t include IR Blaster again in Samsung S8 & S8 Plus. Before answering that, let’s understand a bit in detail what exactly is IR Blaster and why it is used.
What is IR Blaster and why it used?
IR in IR Blaster stand for Infrared. It is basically a device which acts as a universal remote. It can be used to control devices which require remote like TV, AC, DVD Player etc. So, in most simple terms, if your device features IR Blaster you can easily control TV/AC etc via your phone only. You can also use an app along with IR Blaster for better functionality.
How does IR Blaster work ?
An IR Blaster basically emits an infrared signal to the device and afterwards control its different functions. This infrared signal is emitted by a tiny LED and it cannot be seen by a naked eye.
This infrared signal contains specific infrared code in the form of pattern meant for each device and function. So, if your phone features an IR Blaster, it can work as a universal remote.
Why there is no IR Blaster in Samsung Galaxy S8?
There is no rocket science in understanding that why Samsung decided to skip IR blaster in their latest flagship. As per Internet rumors and reports, Samsung conducted a research to know the facts and figures of how many users were using the IR Blaster in their Galaxy Note 4 or Galaxy S6.
The number were so less that there was no point in continuing this further in the next line-up of devices. Also, including an IR Blaster means more cost of production thus increasing the unit cost of S8 & S8 Plus
Samsung in no way want to increase the price of S8 & S8 Plus, so it was a wise decision to skip the IR Blaster in Galaxy S8. Interestingly, most of the flagships are now ditching the IR Blaster form their flagships and recently launched LG G6 is the best example of this.
