Will Samsung Galaxy S8 come with USB-C connector?

October 5, 2016 | Amit Arora

As the rumors start pouring on new Samsung Galaxy S8, there are so many expectations from consumers as to whether the new Galaxy s8 will come with USB-C connector or not. To be clear now USB C is the future of Android connections for data and power, yet Samsung has not recognized to include this connection type and not used it Samsung Galaxy S7.

Usb-cport Will Samsung Galaxy S8 come with USB-C connector?

It’s interesting to know that other brands such as LG announced at MWC2016 to use this port type in LG G5, and we’ve also come across the same from Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P and OnePlus2.The benefits of USB-C Connector is unquestionable. USB C is small, powerful and most of all reversible. And it takes the likes of big smartphone brands like Samsung to smooth the way for the transition from micro USB.
Reasons for Samsung not introducing this connector type

Samsung Gear VR

The increasing VR platform that Samsung is actively pushing was the primary reason why the company hasn’t adopted the use of USB C. The Samsung Galaxy S7 plugs into Gear VR which has a Micro USB port. It’s too early to make a change as the people who have bought the headset six months ago will be disappointed with the recent change. So it needs to be all worked out at the right time to be delivered.
These points make a lot of sense from Samsung’s point of view as it will be awkward just to fit in any USB C to micro USB adapter in the headset. As Samsung Galaxy Virtual Reality Headset consumer edition has just come out a few months back, so new changes on USB C is no way near.

Consumer Not Ready

What this being said is the most obvious answer. Samsung is currently giving out dozens of micro USB cables, along with new Samsung Galaxy S7. They feel the market is not ready yet to adapt to USB-C Connector.
As most of the Bluetooth headphones now charge via micro USB and sudden changes will not be a real market for Samsung. There needs to be a time for introduction USB C to android market which supports other gadgets as well.

Fast Charging Available in S7

Samsung Galaxy S7 currently uses nonreversible micro USB cable, and it can be difficult to plug at dark times versus the phones which use omnidirectional USB C cable.
However, Samsung has equivalent to New C standard when it comes to fast charging its devices, which can take the battery life from 0 to 30% in a short time as much as 30 minutes.

Conclusion:

All this needs to be understood that USB C will be a worthy upgrade over Micro USB and it would seem very curious to know that Galaxy S8 didn’t make the switch this time. Perhaps the only downside to this upgrading would be that the  Samsung Galaxy S8 wouldn’t be compatible with existing Gear VR headsets, which use Micro USB connections. If Samsung makes up its mind and did switch to USB Type-C, then it’s likely that the next generation of Gear VT will follow in support with the new connection type.
