Could There Be a Samsung Galaxy S8 Redesign?

November 19, 2015 | Amit Arora

A possible Samsung Galaxy S8 redesign could be in the planning stage as we speak. Whilst the chance of a complete could be unlikely, we’d like to talk about the possible changes Samsung may make to the S8 that could differ from previous iterations in the Galaxy lineup.

Below, we discuss the latest rumors on the design of the upcoming Galaxy S8 including the latest word on the display, operating system, and the technology that will go into the S8 Edge and S8 Edge Plus.

Redesigned Samsung Galaxy S8 Display

The first thing that could come to fruition in a Galaxy S8 redesign could be a new display. Samsung has been developing foldable and curved displays for a while now so a move to foldable technology could be a possibility. Alternatively, Samsung may drop the ‘Edge’ moniker and move the curved display into their standard flagship device, meaning all variants of the Galaxy S8 could have the curved ‘Edge’ display.

The other possibility is that Samsung keep their current design plan and release a GS8 with a standard flat display and a Samsung Galaxy S8 Edge with a curved display. So far, we’re not really sure what Samsung will choose but it’s unlikely for them to adopt a foldable display for their flagship lineup so early.

New Samsung Galaxy S8 Operating System

We’re not just talking about a new approach to TouchWiz here – Samsung has been using their own OS on their smartwatches for a while. Samsung’s mobile OS is called Tizen and there have always been rumors that Samsung may eventually drop Android on their smartphones in favor of this OS. So far Tizen is lightyears behind Android so it may be an unwise choice for Samsung to adopt this OS but if they manage to create a strong enough presence in the mobile world, they may consider it.

You’d think that Samsung already has enough presence to pull something like this off but unfortunately there is too much competition in the smartphone world for a Samsung Galaxy S8 redesign to include Tizen as an OS without losing a large chunk of paying customers.

Samsung Galaxy S8 Edge – Scrapped or Improved?

Earlier in this article we mentioned that a redesign could change up how Samsung approach their display technology. So far the Edge devices released by Samsung haven’t really done enough to be considered worthwhile by the general population but there is still potential there. We think that Samsung will try to further make use of the Edge display before considering scrapping it completely. Most of the improvements would have to be on a software level, including additional Edge apps or Edge functionality.
