Samsung Galaxy S8 Pros & Cons

April 29, 2017 | Richard Dunn

Samsung recently launched their much-awaited flagship phone Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus. Samsung has changed many things in the latest phone of Galaxy S8 while it has also retained few things as well.

Just like every coin has two sides, Galaxy S8 also comes with its own set of pros & cons. Here is the detailed analysis of Samsung Galaxy S8 Pros & Cons.

Samsung Galaxy S8 Pros : Things we love

Excellent Design

Samsung has done a splendid job in terms of design. The device looks like a classic piece of art with Corning Gorilla Glass on both sides. Samsung has done a lot of research on the design part which is the reason that we have an 18:9 screen ration phone.

While most of the mobile manufacturers are still wondering how to deliver a design with the bigger display but in a compact size, Samsung decoded this with 18:9 screen ratio way.

It is a taller device and offers exactly what customer’s needs, a big display but not big size phone. In most simple terms, no one comes near Samsung in the field of design as of now.

Infinity Display

Samsung Galaxy S8 boasts of a display which is unique in its own way. The company is calling is ‘Infinity Display’ and it is the best display you can get on a smartphone.

Display of Samsung Galaxy S8

It is almost bezel-less and there are no buttons on it making it a button less display as well. The curves on both the sides look beautiful and give you a feeling of holding something futuristic.

The 5.8” AMOLED display offers excellent color saturation and image quality. The display boasts of a feature known as Mobile HDR Premium which helps in delivering better color, darker blacks & brighter whites.

Best in Class Camera

Samsung features 12 MP rear camera and 8 MP secondary. No doubt, the numbers aren’t big but is the quality which matters. Samsung is using the ‘Dual Pixel’ technology which helps in getting ultra-fast autofocus.

Another great feature is the Multi-Frame Image Processing where the camera clicks three images at a time and collates these three to deliver the best possible image.

The Pro Mode helps in setting the ISO and white balance as per the need. The best part about Samsung is that it offers auto focus in the front camera as well, a feature which is present only in a handful of phones.

World Class Latest technology & Specification

Samsung has always maintained its focus on proving the latest technology in their smartphone and Galaxy S8 is not an exception. Following the traditional rule, Samsung has launched S8 with two different chipsets. The US version features the latest Qualcomm MSM 8998 Snapdragon 835 while the rest of the world version features Samsung’s own Exynos 8896 Octa.

Samsung Galaxy S8 Processor

Both the chipsets are supported with the latest and advance 10-nanomater design and S8 is the first device to use this design. Another new & latest technology which is clubbed in S8 is ‘Dex’.

This works like ‘Microsoft Continuum’ and with this, you can use Samsung Galaxy S8 like a mini computer via a HDMI supported monitor.  4 GB RAM, 64 GB internal Storage, expandable storage of up to 256 GB and Android 7.0 Nougat makes it a beast in terms of performance.

Iris Scanner

Iris Scanner is not a new technology and we have already seen it in Note 7. However, it was still in the test phase and had some technical glitch. Samsung has managed to make it faster and secure in the Samsung Galaxy S8. The device can recognize your face in a much lesser time and keep on improving every time you unlock the device via Iris Scanner.

The only downside is that it can be fooled easily by a photo. But, again you can make it more secure by having a combination of Face Lock & Pattern.

Bluetooth 5.0 & Expandable Storage

Samsung Galaxy S8 is also the first device to feature the latest Bluetooth 5.0. Though there are still only few devices which supports this but finally you can pair two Bluetooth speakers to your S8 at the same time and can play music through both. Most of the flagships are now walking on Apple’s footsteps by eliminating the expandable storage options. But, S8 offers expandable storage of up to 256 GB.

USB Type C & Wireless Charging

It was a big shock when Samsung didn’t opt for USB C in the Samsung Galaxy S7. Type C has become a common feature now in most of the flagship. Finally, Samsung realized the need to include Type C USB in Samsung Galaxy S8 along with Wireless Charging.

Water Resistant

Samsung Galaxy S8 features IP68 ratings which means that it is dust & water resistant. It is capable of surviving in the 1.5m deep water for up to 30 minutes suggesting that rain, water splash won’t harm the all new Samsung Galaxy S8.

Samsung Galaxy S8 Cons: Things which could have been better

Finger-Print Scanner Position

To make the display better & bezel-less, Samsung moved the fingerprint scanner from front to rear. That is not an issue as even many flagship devices feature finger print scanner on the back side of the phone. However, the down side is the position of this scanner.

Cons of Samsung Galaxy S8

It is placed at a very absurd position next to the rear camera which is difficult to reach. You will end up smudging the camera lens trying to scan your finger print. Samsung claims that they wanted to keep the symmetry with the lens but no reason can justify such a weird position of finger print scanner.

Samsung’s decision to choose symmetry over usability can cost Samsung some users who want their things at the right place.

Bixby: A Blatant Copy

Bixby is no doubt the biggest mistake of Samsung in the Galaxy S8. It’s difficult to understand why would Samsung come up with an AI which is already in use.

Bixby is identical to Google Now and works exactly like it with limited features. Samsung went on to dedicate a button for Bixby alongside the volume rocker and reason behind it is still unclear.

The voice control feature is still missing and it seems like Samsung was trying to make something else but due to deadlines ended up with Bixby.

Hybrid Dual SIM Tray

Though it is not that big issue but, it can be irritating some times. Samsung Galaxy S8 is a Dual SIM phone but there is a catch. You can either use Dual SIM or Memory Card.

If you are planning to use two SIMs and Memory Card at the same time, you will be disappointed to know that it is not possible in the S8.

3000 mAh Battery

It can be understood that Samsung is not ready to do any experiment with battery after the Note 7 case. But still, 3000 mAh battery is not enough to run a 5.8” AMOLED always on Display.

However, it should also be noted that the new processor uses 25% less power as compared to Galaxy S7. But, we think that Samsung should have gone with at least 3500 mAh of battery.

Must Check Articles :

Average Speakers

It seems like that Samsung forgot to work on the speakers and when they realized, it was too late so they shipped it with single speaker at the bottom which fails to impress. The sound is too low and it could have been much better if there were dual speakers.

Conclusion

Samsung Galaxy S8 has got the features which can impress the users at the very first sight but at the same time, few feature can damage its image in the market. Now, it’s the choice of users whether they will love the pros more or hate the cons more. Please share your views in comment section given below 🙂
