After months of speculation on the release date of the Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge, the official unveiling at MWC revealed what we’ve all been wanting to know. Not many surprises as leaks for the past month showed us what an amazing handset would be unveiled, and launch announcement proved once again Sammy’s intent on near-perfection.
Both the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge were announced yesterday and it’s no surprise to see numerous similarities and some welcome additions to the S6 concept. At first sight, we see Samsung’s Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge all over again, but after getting up close and personal there everything but.
The S7 retains the same size as the S6 coming in at 5.3 inches while the S7 Edge will come in at 5.7 inches. Both will boast an amazing display quality with a resolution of 1440 x 2560 and sport the latest version of Gorilla Glass 4 for superior protection. Depending on where you live, you’ll either see an Exynos 8890 octa-core processor or the Snapdragon 820 SoC while both will be two of the fastest smartphone processors on the market.
Some of the biggest differences when comparing both the S7/S7 Edge with last year’s S6/S6 Edge comes in the form of what was lacking in last year’s variant. This year we’ll see waterproof and dustproof features with an IP68 rating which means the new handset can be submerged in up to 1.5 meters of water for up to 30 minutes.
Expandable memory will also be returning with a Micro SD card slot giving you up to 200GB of memory which will give you plenty of storage options for those who love pictures, downloading movies, and other forms of data. This will bode well for those looking for the largest memory option as Samsung is doing away with the 128 GB model as both the S7 and S7 Edge will only be available in 32 and 64 GB variants.
You won’t have to wait long to get your hands on Samsung’s latest and greatest as preorders start February 23rd with an official Galaxy S7 and S7 release date announced for March 11th. Sammy is throwing in some freebies for those willing to preorder as you can get a free Gear VR with $50 worth of software just for preordering before March 5th. Also, Samsung promises that if you preorder either handset before the 5th you will have it delivered to your doorstep on or before March 8th which is three days before in-store availability.
For those in the UK, the price of the S7 is set at €699, and while the US price has yet to be made official it’s expected to set you back around $780 for the 32 GB variant.
